How to Pack and Move Your Kitchen

kitchen, move, pack

The kitchen is the centre of most households. Moving this room has challenges because it has so many breakable, dangerous and odd shaped objects. However, with care and good packing materials it need not be too difficult.

The Best Way to Pack and Move Your Kitchen

Prepare

At least a week beforehand, prepare by buying lots of packing paper; bubble wrap and good boxes in several sizes and what are called “cell packs” for glassware. Cell packs are cardboard pieces configured into a grid that allows items to have their own little space. They are flexible for various size glasses, vases and even glass jars of food. Also have box labels or large black marker pens.

Get the right equipment

Use heavy-duty boxes in various sizes. Plates and platters are usually heavy and cumbersome. Flimsy boxes usually can’t take the pressure and will break. Try to not pack boxes so that they’re really heavy because that increases the risk that they’ll be dropped in transit.

Organize

Sort through your pots and pans to find the best way to stack them according to size. Being able to fit smaller pots in larger ones will help you to economize in your packing space. Pack all your pots in pans in dedicated boxes so that you’ll be able to easily find them in your new kitchen.

Be safe

Knives are tricky to pack. Corks left over from wine bottles are wonderful to place over the tips of sharp knives (or some duct tape). Get a large role of bubble wrap and have spotless towels on hand. These are both great for packing sharp knives. Instead of having them loose in a box, lay out a towel or bubble wrap and lay one row of knives. Roll the towel over them so they’re completely covered, lay out another row of utensils and repeat. At the end, wrap some tape around the roll and label it. Now all your knives are in one area, easily moveable, not dangerous and labelled.

Keep things together

Small appliances like blenders, juicers, rice cookers and the like should be packed with all their accessories. Cords, blades, lids, etc should all go in the same box. Always clearly label all sealed boxes with stick on labels or magic marker pens. Be sure to have large plastic zip up bags for messy things like oils and cooking ingredients that you want to transport.
